Pound Ridge Golf Club Builds a Permeable Patio
Pound Ridge Golf Club was carved out of 172 acres of rocky cliffs and wooded hills in Westchester County, NY. Pound Ridge, which opened in July 2008, offers an 18-hole daily fee public course that measures 7,171 yards from the back tees and plays to a par 72. The spellbinding layout winds through hardwood forest and opens to rolling meadows. Daunting rock outcroppings are a distinctive element of the challenging course, which was designed by the legendary Pete Dye. At every step in the development of Pound Ridge, careful attention was paid to environmental protection not only to comply with land use planning regulations but to fulfill the vision of Pound Ridge developer and owner, Ken Wang.
Flowing streams and adjacent wetlands are vital natural features of Pound Ridge, and the golf club has a stormwater management plan to safeguard water quality. For example, the Pound Ridge landscape features 18 stormwater basins and bioswales with native plants for biofiltration of surface runoff water. The club’s commitment to stormwater management was evident in the design and construction of a new 1,500-square-foot patio at Pound Ridge in the spring of 2009.
“Protecting water quality by controlling the rate of runoff is a paramount concern to us in the prevention of erosion and water pollution,” says Richard Lyman, who manages construction at Pound Ridge Golf Club. “Our stormwater management plan requires minimizing the addition of impervious surfaces on the property and maximizing absorption of stormwater. The selection of VAST Permeable Composite Pavers was a good choice. It enabled us to do a permeable installation with a material that offered two other important advantages: recycled content and a look that harmonizes with the natural rock walls surrounding the patio.”

Selecting the Right Patio Material
Situated on a promontory that provides stunning views of a number of holes and the Long Island Sound in the distance, the patio was envisioned as a perfect spot for after-round beverages, lunch, or small private events. Rock walls stand out as one of the most prominent hardscape features of Pound Ridge. The course itself is bordered by 14,000 linear feet of rock walls. Therefore, a basic design decision for the patio was to build a rock wall, measuring 30 inches high by 24 inches wide, to establish the perimeter of the 30-foot by 45-foot space.
In considering materials for the patio, two basic requirements were essential. The material chosen for the patio would have to lend itself to a permeable installation, and its appearance had to complement the rock walls.
VAST Enterprises produces green building products with its patented technology that turns post-consumer recycled rubber and plastics into an eco-friendly material: composite masonry. The composite material consists of up to 95% recycled automobile tires and plastic containers. VAST composite masonry products include Composite Landscape Pavers, Permeable Composite Pavers for stormwater management, Composite Deck Pavers, and Brick Wall Fascia.
“The VAST Pavers look like traditional brick pavers, and they complement our signature rock walls that run throughout the golf course,” explains Lyman. “The permeable version is designed for applications like our patio, and the recycled material is slip resistant and low maintenance.”

Permeable Installation and Results
To prepare the base for the permeable installation, Lyman’s crew excavated the site and pitched the patio toward the entrance, designed as a wide walkway sloping up to the patio itself. They put down 4 inches of three-fourth-inch trap rock and compacted it with a plate tamper. Two inches of three-eighth-inch native stone were then added on top to complete the base. A perforated pipe located at the foot of the walkway leads infiltrated water from the base out to one of the stormwater basins on the Pound Ridge grounds.
The installation grid system is a unique feature of the product. “We positioned the grid squares on top of the base,” says Lyman. “When the crew fit the pavers into the grid, the pavers were automatically spaced, aligned, and leveled. The grid made it possible for my own crew to do the whole project.”
Installation was easy and fast. After viewing the VAST training video, the Pound Ridge crew took a day and half to complete the patio, once the base was prepared, including completing the radius borders of the walkway that required cutting and fitting. A common chop saw was all that was needed for cutting, as opposed to having to rent a wet saw to cut concrete pavers.

“If we had decided to use concrete permeable pavers, we probably would have contracted out the installation. I’m not sure we could have done it ourselves. It would have taken us a lot more time, especially having to level each paver,” says Lyman. “Contracting out would have added three or more dollars per square foot to our costs for the patio.”
“Everyone at Pound Ridge Golf Club is impressed with the results,” says Todd Leavenworth, general manager. “The patio looks fantastic and fits right in with the natural setting of our landscape. The pavers have a comfortable feeling under foot, and they don’t get slippery when wet. We made an excellent choice in materials. Such a product will become popular with other golf clubs seeking sound environmental solutions.”
